Project Zomboid Build 42 Unstable with multiplayer support is finally here. We've seen quite a few common issues with the update and we want to put them in one place to help you get your server up and running. We will update this page with more common issues as we discover them.
While mods are not officially recommended by the game developers on the unstable build, many mod authors have updated their mods to be compatible. To install mods on B42 you will need to list the Mod IDs, Workshop IDs and the Map folders if you are using map mods. The steps are the same as our guide here, but have one extra step.
In Build 41, Mod IDs are listed as follows:
mods=Mod1;Mod2;Mod3
In Build 42 Unstable, Mod ID are listed as follows:
mods=\Mod1;\Mod2;\Mod3
Mods must now contain the extra \ or else they will not be loaded by the server.
Please note that many mods are not supported, and the mod must be confirmed as compatible with Build 42.13. Mods will cause more crashes and instability to your server while on Build 42 Unstable.
Some particular Sandbox Settings do not save on servers. If the setting you want to change reverted after a server restart, it is likely the setting is not yet supported by the game on dedicated servers, even if they work in singleplayer. A common example of this is the Zombie speed setting, which will always revert to the default value.
This is a bug when the server first starts on Build 42. To fix this, login to your file manager and delete /server-data/db/pzserver.db. Note: This will remove all ranks and the server whitelist. It will NOT delete player data such as inventory and skills.
The game developers have made note that they do not recommend servers exceed 20 players online at one time to avoid frequent crashes. While you can play with as many players as your plan allows, you may experience more crashes than servers with less concurrent players.
Chickens among other animals have been reported to cause crashes upon spawning or inspecting them. Be ware of these foul creatures roaming Kentucky.
Safehouses and certain objects in them may also cause crashing. Removing all safehouses and preventing more from being claimed should fix the issue. This may be related to the animal crash noted above.
