Before you head out to fight, mine or sail, it pays to sit down at home first. Resting in a furnished base gives you the Rested buff, which speeds up health and stamina regeneration and helps your skills level faster. How long that buff lasts depends on your comfort level, and your comfort level depends on the furniture around you.
This guide explains the rules, shows how far each biome's materials can take you, and lists every piece that adds comfort. The numbers apply to Valheim 1.0 and include the Deep North.
Your comfort level is added up from the furniture near the place where you are resting. A few things decide what gets counted:
Shelter. Furniture only counts while you are sheltered, which means a roof overhead and walls around you. Out in the open your comfort is 1, whatever is standing nearby.
Distance. A piece has to be no more than 10 meters from you. Height counts as well as floor distance, so furniture on another story is fine as long as it is close enough.
Categories. Furniture is sorted into categories such as chairs, rugs and beds. You get credit for one piece per category, and the game picks the most valuable one. Filling a room with five chairs gives you the same comfort as one chair of the best type.
Heat. The Campfire, the Hearth and most braziers only count while they are burning, and the Hot Tub only counts while it is heated. Let one run out of fuel and its points disappear until you refuel it.
Time. Rest near a lit fire for 20 seconds, either sitting down or standing under shelter, and the buff kicks in.

To work out the length of the buff, add 7 to your comfort level. A starter hut at 5 comfort gives 12 minutes of Rested. A fully furnished endgame hall at 22 comfort gives 29 minutes.
Note: Comfort is calculated for each player separately, based on where they are sitting. On a multiplayer server this means one well furnished common room can buff the whole group, as long as everyone rests inside it.
You cannot reach 22 straight away, because the better furniture needs materials from later biomes. The table shows the highest comfort you can reach once you have access to each biome, and which new pieces get you there. Every row builds on the ones before it.

| Biome | Comfort cap | Rested time | New pieces to build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meadows | 5 | 12 min | Roofed shelter (2), Campfire (1), Bed (1), Deer Rug (1) |
| Black Forest | 13 | 20 min | Bearskin Rug (2), Wood Chair (2), Table (1), a banner (1), Flower Garland (1), Item Stand (1), Barber Station (1) |
| Swamp | 15 | 22 min | Hearth (2), Raven Throne (3) |
| Mountain | 17 | 24 min | Dragon Bed (2), Red Jute Curtain (2) |
| Plains | 19 | 26 min | Round Table (2), Hot Tub (2) |
| Mistlands | 20 | 27 min | Dvergr Wall Lantern (1) |
| Ashlands | 22 | 29 min | Lava Lantern (2), Medium Green Pot (1) |
| Deep North | 22 | 29 min | No increase |
The number in brackets is what the piece is worth by itself. When a new piece takes over from an older one in the same category, your total only goes up by the difference. The Hearth is worth 2, for example, but it takes the Campfire's place, so swapping them is a gain of 1.
Your first house gets you to 5. Put a roof over a campfire, place a bed, and lay down a rug made from deer hide. All of this is available from the workbench as soon as you start.
This is where comfort grows the most, from 5 up to 13. Once you are working bronze you can add a proper chair, a table, a banner, an item stand and a flower garland, and trade the deer rug for a bearskin one. The last point comes from the Barber Station. Building it takes a Barber Kit, which is sold by Hildir, so you will need to track down her camp.
The item stand can stay empty. It counts either way.
Iron opens up two replacements worth a point each. Build a Hearth to take over from the Campfire, and a Raven Throne to take over from the Wood Chair. That puts you at 15.
Two more replacements bring you to 17: the Dragon Bed in place of the basic Bed, and a Red Jute Curtain in place of your banner. Curtains and banners share a category, so hanging both is only useful as decoration.
You will also unlock the Wolf Rug and the Stone Throne here. They look different but score the same as the Bearskin Rug and the Raven Throne, so building them is a style choice.
Swap the Table for a Round Table or a Long Heavy Table, and add a Hot Tub, to reach 19. The Hot Tub needs wood to stay warm. If you notice your Rested timer coming up short in a Plains era base, an unheated tub is the first thing to check.
The Mistlands add a new category, lanterns, and a single point with it. Either Dvergr lantern will do. The black marble furniture and blue jute fabrics from this biome score the same as pieces you already own.
The final two points are here. A Lava Lantern beats the Dvergr lanterns by one, and a green pot (any size) or an Asksvin Skeleton fills the ornament category. With those placed you are at 22, the most that regular furniture can give.
The Deep North comes with its own furniture set: an Antler Throne, a Carved Chair and Carved Bench, Long and Square Carved Tables, a Moose Hide Carpet and a Sealskin Rug. None of them score higher than what you already have, so your comfort stays at 22. The Snow Lantern from this biome is an alternative to the Lava Lantern at the same value.
If you just want the finished room, place one item for each line below within 10 meters of your bed or seat.

| Category | Build this | Comfort |
|---|---|---|
| Shelter | A roof overhead and a lit fire nearby | 2 |

The Maypole and the Yule Tree are each worth 1 comfort and each have a category to themselves. That means they add to your total no matter what else you have built, and they add to each other.
Maypole: can be built while the midsummer event is running. You can also come across one already standing in the Meadows and build your base around it.
Yule Tree: can be built while the Yule event is running.
A base with both reaches 24 comfort, for 31 minutes of Rested.
Every piece that affects comfort, sorted by category and value. Remember that within one category you only get the highest value you have placed.

Note: Snow Lanterns do not hold up well in warmer biomes. If your main base is anywhere other than the Mountain or the Deep North, go with the Lava Lantern.
Check these in order:
Is the fire still burning, and is the Hot Tub still warm? Both need fuel.
Are you resting in the same spot as before? Moving to a different seat can put some furniture beyond the 10 meter limit.
Are you counting two pieces from one category? A banner and a curtain, or a bed and a Dragon Bed, only score once.
Resting needs a lit fire close to you, and you have to be either sitting down or under shelter. It will not start while an enemy has noticed you, or while you are Wet, Cold, Freezing or Burning. Dry off or warm up, then try again. The one exception is the Hot Tub: you can rest in a heated tub even though you are wet.
Because the 10 meter limit works vertically too, you can tuck the pieces you do not like into a cellar, a loft or a small pit under the floorboards. They still count as long as they are near enough to your seat.
