The Deep North is the last biome on Valheim's map, arriving alongside the 1.0 release on September 9, 2026. After five plus years in early access, this is the one everyone's been staring at from across the ice wall. Guess Christmas comes in September this year.
Note: The Deep North only generates in parts of your world you have not already explored. If your group already sailed to the far north on your current save, that ground stays as it was. Iron Gate recommends starting a fresh world to see the biome as intended. See How to Use Custom World Modifiers if you want to spin one up with specific settings.
The Deep North launches with Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026, confirmed by Iron Gate on June 7, 2026. It sits at the far northern edge of the map, past the Mistlands and Ashlands in the normal progression order, and is the last biome Iron Gate has planned for the game.

Shorelines are slippery ice sheets. The mainland is dense, snow-covered forest broken up by open areas with large abandoned villages. The ground is covered in tall snow that, unlike snow in the Mountains, does not slow you down, though whether Mountain snow behaves the same way after 1.0 isn't confirmed.
Ghosts of the biome's previous inhabitants wander those villages. They can't be interacted with, but do have dialogue lines, atmosphere rather than a threat.

Compared with the Ashlands, the Deep North reportedly has fewer enemy types but larger, individually stronger ones. There's also no physical barrier like the Ashlands' boiling ocean gating entry. Instead, you're kept out by the sheer strength of what lives there, and by needing to have already defeated Fader to make real progress. Iron Gate has described the biome as roughly "2 to 2.5 biomes worth" of content, since it's both the last zone and the game's ending.
| Enemy | What it does |
|---|---|
| Gammeltroll | The largest creature in Valheim. Throws tree trunks, isn't a boss. Turns to stone on death, harvested with Ember Charges for Petrified Tissue, the raw source of Bloodgold. |
| Elaking / Elakingar | Hostile, shaggy and horned, built like a Greydwarf, often reported carrying a lantern to light its way. Found above ground at night and inside the Winding Tunnels dungeon. |
| Eyeless One / The Blind One | Dungeon-dwelling enemy in the Winding Tunnels. Sources are split on the name. |
| Luminous Larvae | Found inside the Winding Tunnels. Earlier coverage listed it only as a lootable material, more recent hands-on previews describe it as a creature you fight, treat both roles as possible until launch settles it. |
There have been hostile undead Viking ghosts described patrolling village ruins, separate from the non-hostile ambient ghosts above. The final boss is still officially secret. Creative director Robin Eyre has only said it is not Loki, nothing otherwise is confirmed.

Press coverage close to launch also named a few non-hostile creatures rounding out the biome: tameable, rideable Moose, coastal Seals, and something called Shapeless Pulp, with no behavior details confirmed for that last one yet.

Two dungeon types are confirmed:
| Dungeon | Details |
|---|---|
| Winding Tunnels | Entered through openings in large village houses. Icy, maze-like interior housing Elaking/Elakingar, the Eyeless One/Blind One, and the Luminous Larvae. Frostcores and Moulds are also found inside, used to craft Bloodgold gear at the Frost Foundry. |
| Gates of Mörkhalla | Entered through fortress-like structures. Requires an Intricate Key. Less detail is public so far. |

Also confirmed through press previews: a new Nord weapon tier crafted from Bloodgold at the Frost Foundry, three new armor tiers, a Frostfire Crossbow, and a Hooded Lantern. New building options include a drawbridge and steeper roof pieces. The grappling hook is a new traversal tool tied to the biome, connecting via chain to anchor points and letting players swing or scale terrain. An ice maker tool for crafting ice blocks will also be introduced. Cold resistance gear will matter here too. The biome carries a frostbite debuff - so wrap up warm!
From the official 1.0 FAQ: the update focuses on the Deep North, with some smaller additions elsewhere in the game. The Ocean biome specifically gets no content update.
From press previews and hands-on coverage (Iron Gate staff, on record): the terrain, enemies, wildlife, gear, and dungeons described above.
Still unconfirmed or contested: the final boss's identity, whether hostile Viking ghosts exist as a separate enemy, which name is correct for the Winding Tunnels dungeon creature, and whether Luminous Larvae is a creature, a material, or both.
